The drugmaker Pfizer on Tuesday said it would not renew the contract to make Viagra available to customers, despite the company’s latest move to lower the price of its drug, called the drugmaker’s generic.
The move follows a similar one on the U. S. market for erectile dysfunction drug Viagra, which has been in shortage ever since its manufacturer released the generic in late October.
Pfizer said it would not renew Viagra’s U. patent for Viagra, as it has been known to be available in the U. for more than a decade. But Viagra’s U. patent is still expected to expire this year, giving Pfizer the exclusive right to make generic versions of the drug.
The drugmaker said it was pleased with the new move and said it was working to improve the availability of generic versions of Viagra. It added that it was working closely with the Food and Drug Administration to develop new formulations and to ensure consumers receive the most effective treatment for the condition they are most likely to see.
The announcement comes after a decade in which Pfizer and its rivals in the drug industry faced costly patent expirations and other legal challenges. Last month, the patent for Viagra, which was first launched in 1998, fell to six years in 2005, a year after the drugmaker lost its patent protection in Europe.
Pfizer said that the patent expired in June 2010, enabling it to make generic versions of the drug, which is sold under brand names such as Lipitor and Zoloft, and sell them as well. In August 2011, the drugmaker said it would not renew Viagra’s U. patent, saying the decision had been made in light of “current concerns about the effectiveness of generic competition.”
Pfizer has said that it will continue to make generic versions of Viagra as it makes its next available product, a rival to its popular generic, generically known as Levitra.
The decision to make Viagra available to consumers is likely to reflect Pfizer’s strategy of making the drug available to all men by December 2012, rather than as a sole supplier.
In January, the company said that it was adding a new product, called D-Aspigran, to its list of approved drugs, which includes Viagra.
It is also looking for other ways to cut down on the cost of the drug, as its generic versions are often far less expensive than the brand-name drug. Pfizer, which makes Viagra, said it is taking steps to reduce the overall cost of the drug.
“We have been making important progress in this area,” said Jim Sage, Pfizer’s president of global product portfolio. “The way we approach the pricing of our drug is very similar to our previous approach.”
Pfizer, in a statement late on Tuesday, said that it “has completed and completed the development of the generic version of Viagra that is currently available and that has been approved by the FDA.”
The company also said that it was working with regulatory authorities and the FDA to make sure generic versions of the drug are not available in the United States.

Viagra is currently on the market without competition from generic competition.
Pfizer is seeking to make generic versions of the drug, including the company’s popular generic, generic sildenafil, and its alternative, generic vardenafil, as well as those of its other generic drug rival, Viagra.
Pfizer said that the company would also make available its own generic version of Viagra, called Levitra, to customers in the U. and Canada.

It works by affecting the enzyme phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) which causes dysfunction. PDE5 is responsible for breaking down cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) in the corpus cavernosum. cGMP is essential for smooth muscle cells and endothelial cells in the penis. This leads to relaxation of the blood vessels and increased blood flow. The medicine works by inhibiting the enzyme PDE5, preventing this process from occurring.
